The first-ever race at Miami International Autodrome will be a W Series event at 14:25 on Saturday, with a Porsche Sprint Challenge event following F1 qualifying.

What will the Miami Grand Prix track look like?

The Miami International Autodrome is a 3.36-mile anti-clockwise road course surrounding the home of the Miami Dolphins NFL and the University of Miami (also known as Hurricanes) College Football teams.

The Miami International Autodrome is 8.5 kilometers, with 19 turns – seven right-handers, 12 left-handers – and three straights, the longest of which is just under a mile in length. The lap times predicted by the FIA are in the 1m 35s range, with an average F1 lap speed estimated at 134mph in simulations.

The track is semi-permanent and was designed by Apex Circuit Design of the United Kingdom, with 2,864 concrete blocks and 2,976 debris fence panels set up for each race and then removed to allow for parking at the stadium activities.

The track itself comprises 85,000 yards of asphalt laid in three strips – weighing 24,000 tons in total. It’s 50 feet broad in most areas, but it narrows to 32 feet at Turn 16 when the track passes under two overpasses and joins the Turnpike road that connects Miami to Orlando.

The back straight will produce speeds of approximately 190mph, with maximum braking loads of 5.5g and laterals of 5.1g anticipated on the track.

On top is a permanent pit building with 36 garages and a double-decker Paddock Club hospitality area. Turn nine leads to a sweeping bend known as Shanghai Bend, where the gondola cable car station is. The track continues through another two turns before reaching the next main straight. Another notable feature is a gondola cable car system, which crosses over the track near Turn 9.

Following residents’ complaints about the disruption caused by closing the 199th Street thoroughfare, the track’s design had to be changed from an earlier plan.

How Many Formula 1 Races Are There in the United States?
